Spanish Flu and Covid-19

Shared by Alberto Fraile:

This is an engaging activity based on Change and Continuity skills. My proposal was to analyze with the collaboration of different disciplines the relation between the Spanish Flu and the Covid 19.

Throughout a guided plan, students comment historical sources, summarize current data, make predictions, design thematic maps, identify problems and recognize effects of the Covid in our daily life.

Pre-Columbian civilizations

Shared by Julen García:

Option 1:

An example of activity that I carry out in the classroom is using kahoot game in order to review the main contents and vocabulary of the unit.

The one that I use is related with pre-Columbian civilizations:

https://create.kahoot.it/share/aztec-inca-maya-quiz-g-h-2-eso-jgg/d30b2ff8-7ac7-4e1d-84e7-e0e59e65bfe2

I consider so important student´s motivation so I try to use this kind of resources in my classes, they really enjoy them, they review the main contents and also the main vocabulary.

Option 2:

I go on working on pre-Columbian civilizations. I show the students brief videos about these civilizations in order to introduce contents related with them and also I provide them with more resources such as articles, notes.

Finally, they have to create their notes completing questions according with the key points of these civilizations.

Landscapes in a box. Project

Shared by Jorge Cabañas García:

In this project you are going to investigate about one of the landscapes on Earth. As you know landscapes are the product of nature and the changes made by the people.Climatic factors influence the appearance of a landscape. In this individual project you will go in depth with one of the landscapes on Earth.

To make this Project you will need a shoe box. In that box you will represent the assigned landscape. You will be able to use different materials such as paper, play dough, cardboard, wooden, etc. In the box you have to put natural elements, hydrography, vegetation, fauna and at least some elements where it is shown the intervention of humans in the landscape.

The landscapes we will work on are:

1. Oceanic landscape

2. Mediterranean landscape

3. Continental landscape

4. Equatorial landscape

5. Tropical landscape

6. Hot desert landscape

7. Polar landscape

8. High mountain landscape

9. Antartic landscape

Here you can see another example:

In some part of the box you will need to put a climate graph that represents the climatic features (temperature and precipitation) of the assigned landscape.

When the landscape is ready you will have to explain your project in front of the class.

The teacher will value: the hard work, effort, clarity, required elements, originality and creativity.

Retrieval Practice

Shared by Miryan Hernando:

I came across this resource on retrieval practice and I like it as asks students to select and justify their choice, something that is normally hard for my 3º and 4º ESO students.

And on this site you will find more resources for retrieval:

On this page you will find a collection of strategies that will support the recalling of information. These worksheets are ideal for use as lesson starter activities, revision tools and as knowledge organisers for any subject and any level of study. They are all free to download.

SPIES in WWII: women in the dark

I have found the following review of the film very interesting in more than one aspect: A Call to Spy

So much of good storytelling is finding the stories not yet told, peeking through the cracks for the voices and experiences that haven't "made it" into the mainstream narrative of oft-told historical events.

This is what "Hidden Figures"the movie and the term itselfis all about. The story of America's space exploration has been told countless times, in books, documentaries, movies, approached from every possible angle. But the "Hidden Figures" story had, quite literally, never been told until Margot Lee Shetterly wrote her wonderful book.

The film The Dig tells the amazing story of an archeological site discovered by an amateur digger: Sutton Hoo, an Anglo-Saxon burial ship.

You should have been able to enjoy the pieces found in the room 41 of the British Museum, but in February 2021 a Google tour will have to do:

How a Gothic catedral was built

HOW A GOTHIC CATHEDRAL WAS BUILT

Shared by Jose Luis Moisén :

We use as a resource a History documentary from BBC4 (How to Build a Cathedral: https://youtu.be/h57bqssrAMs). It will consist of four activities, including each one a written task and an oral presentation:

1.    BISHOPS AND MASTER MASONS

- Who were the people behind the plan and the construction of a cathedral?

- Describe the role played by the powerful bishops and the work developed by expertised master masons

2. SIMBOLISM IN GOTHIC ART

These religious buildings intended to create a spiritual atmosphere where the believer communicated with God and experienced Heaven on Earth.

Explain how and why gothic cathedrals conveyed the following ideas:

-      Height

-      Lightness

-      Brightness

3. GOTHIC ARCHITECTURAL SYSTEM

Gothic style introduced some revolutionary innovations in arquitecture: pointed arch, ribbed vault and flying buttress.

Describe these structures each one and explain how they worked together in the gothic constructive system.

4. STAINED-GLASS WINDOWS

Coloured light was a key factor in a gothic cathedral. It went through the windows and rosettes and filled up its interior evoking the presence of God.

Explain the process (materials, techniques, etc.) followed to obtain the stained-glass windows.

Let's write as Romans did and learning to make a Roman wax tablet

LET'S WRITE AS ROMANS DID

The idea of this workshop is not mine, I have copied it from a workshop we did in Palencia. But I decided to do it in class and it proved to be quite interesting.

This is the process to follow:

1. To make a wooden tablet in the Technology class in advance.

The one on the left is a Romam replica, the one on the right has been made by one student in the Technology classroom.

2. To explain the different supports that Romans used to write:

a) Stone or bronze (for public inscriptions), using the capital letters.

Access to the rest of the lesson plan by clicking here.

Sonia Mª Rodríguez uses this YouTube video explaining how to make a Roman wax tablet.

Students can recreate how Roman children learnt to write while learning or reviewing Roman numerals by writing on the tablet.
